Fun, happy, excited geology major reporting on my experience as part of the RESESS internship program. Hope you enjoy my posts!
Geologist by training, earth scientist at heart.
Hey all... So I'm keeping a countdown until Boulder. 28 days! I am so excited. However, I'm also trying to fit lots of academics into the next few weeks, but it's still exciting!
In the meantime, I'm trying to milk all of my Lawrence education for what it's worth. I am currently doing my last independent research project. I'm trying to identify a particular clay used for cultural purposes. It's for my own personal research and I'm merely curious! Here are a few pictures to see the work space!
Research is fun, especially when it's something you're excited about. Which, is why I'm looking forward to the summer!
HEY!!! It has been a LONG TIME... Good news! I'm going back to RESESS this summer!!
I've actually known about this for a while but I was waiting for the "official" word before saying anything. I'M SUPER EXCITED!!
I've got a lot to do beforehand. I have my RESESS countdown ( 39 days!!) and my graduation coundown (55 days!!) AH! Time is going by quickly. I can't believe graduation is around the corner!
I'm excited for my project. I will be using remote sensing to look over the catchment where I did my research last summer. It's a different component and something that sounds really interesting!
There will be new interns this summer. I'm going to be the "old" intern and take them all under my wing and care for them to make sure they blossom. So, beware new interns. You'll get tired of me. :) As for the returning interns, it will be another awesome summer!
I'll miss my rooommate from last summer, but I hear she's going over the Penn State. Should be a good time for her!
That's all for now. I just wanted to update. Expect more frequent updates as we approach the summer!
I am returning home from a trip visiting Arizona State University. ASU has been one of my top choices that I was planning to apply to. However, something has changed that has nothing to do with the amazing-ness that ASU is (more about ASU in a minute).
It all started with RESESS because my experience as an intern gave me the confidence to proceed through with my graduate degree. I didn't seriously consider grad school until after the summer. Then, it just became more of a reality with time. Unfortunately for me, I started caring about applying to grad schools a little to late because my GPA and GRE scores weren't top notch - and what I mean by that is that they weren't what I wanted them to be. I am my harshest critic and I have a set standard for myself. It's possible that I could have gone into a nice, satisfying graduate program somewhere but the thing is, I want to aim for my goals. To my shock, and to others around me, I made a huge decision. I have decided to take some time off school (I'm still in a little bit of a shock about it). But, it feels like the right decision. Now, this isn't because I don't see myself going to grad school but it's because I want to feel refreshed, energized, and excited about pursuing my degree. I don't want to be anything less than motivated. Upon releasing the news, I want others to understand that if you know me, you know that I am motivated, determined, and willing to try hard. So, that's what I'm going to do. There are probably statistics out there that say it's harder to go back to school after taking time off and that may be true. I don't know other peoples' experience, but what I do know, is me. I am not going to let this opportunity to achieve my highest goals in life pass me by. There is always time (that's one thing I like to think about as a geologist) and I will go back to school. I will suceed and achieve my goals!
One of my goals is to go to Arizona State University. I just spent the day on campus yesterday. It was educational, influential, and wet. AZ has been getting a lot of rain (is it ironic that it started when I got here??? :] ) Anyway, I learned so much by meeting with Dr. Semken, Dr. Vivoni, and Dr. Whipple. I also had the opportunity to meet graduate students and meet with the American Indian Support Services. To have the AISSS program here and and established system means a lot to me. I want to give back and have support that perhaps others like me can understand. ASU is a top notch research institution and I'd love the opportunity to go there!
I can't believe that that was the only picture I took while I was visiting ASU. But, c'est la vie!
So, whether or not I go to ASU, one thing is for certain, I will succeed and receive my graduate degree.
:)
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
